About This Site

barneyebsworth.com is the official companion website to The Life and Times of Barney Ebsworth: From One and a Half Paychecks to $400 Million, the illustrated biography by Paul Terry Walhus.

Who Was Barney Ebsworth?

Bernard Alec "Barney" Ebsworth (July 14, 1934 – April 9, 2018) was an American entrepreneur, art collector, and philanthropist. He founded INTRAV, Royal Cruise Line, and Clipper Cruise Line. He assembled the greatest private collection of American Modernist art in history — sold at Christie’s for $323 million in a single night. He lived next door to Bill Gates, had Georgia O’Keeffe as his wedding witness, and never owned a cell phone.

Who Is the Author?

Paul Terry Walhus is Barney’s cousin, connected through the Frauenthal siblings — Barney’s mother Bernice and Paul’s grandfather Edward were brother and sister, children of Barney W. Frauenthal. Paul grew up in St. Louis with Barney, ran track with him, and spent Christmas Eves at the family table on Gannon Avenue.
